This basically became a necessity as people began quoting from it and had to provide a specific source. Both among Jews and Christians, they began dividing the Bible into chapters and verses. By and large, they were divided mostly along the same lines. Now and then the Hebrew text disagrees with the verse and chapter divisions from the Christian Bible, but that is not very frequent.
